You may know how you are going to vote in the Anchorage municipal elections on April 3. But do you know enough to convey what's at stake to your family, friends, and colleagues?
On Monday February 12, please join 49 Moons, Fair Anchorage, and The Alaska Center for Voting with Our Hearts on April 3, an event focused on getting out the vote in Anchorage and sending a message across the state and the nation that our city wants no part of the politics of division and fear.
We will hear from two activists extraordinaire: Kati Ward, who is leading the fight against Proposition 1 for Fair Anchorage, and Meghan Cavanaugh, Political and Field Director at The Alaska Center. The Alaska Center is supporting Ethan Berkowitz in the mayoral race and working to maximize voter turnout and education around the vote-by-mail election.
Meghan will talk generally about what's on the April ballot and why we all need to turn out. Kati will talk about the local, statewide, and national implications of Proposition 1, which would amend the Anchorage municipal code to eliminate protections for transgender people, singling them out for discrimination.
The event will be at the Writer's Block Bookstore and Cafe at 3956 Spenard Road. Doors open at 5:30 PM and presentations begin at 6:00 PM. The Writer's Block is normally closed that day, so we will have the place to ourselves! There will be food and drinks for purchase, including beer and wine. There is extra parking on Northwood and other neighborhood streets. Please RSVP early!
And don't forget on Saturday February 10, Fair Anchorage, The Alaska Center, and ACLU of Alaska are hosting a city-wide canvass to educate folks on vote-by-mail, from 11:00 AM to 2:00 PM. Meet at 1057 Fireweed Lane for a brief overview on vote by mail and some canvass training. This is a great way to kick off our 2018 get-out-the-vote efforts. Check out Facebook for details.
